Short answer
Press the silence button, then stop using water: no laundry, dishwasher or showers. On most systems the alarm means the water in the pump tank is too high. Check the pump's breaker. If the alarm is still on after a few hours of no water use, call a septic service.
Step by step
- Silence the alarm. Press the button on the panel. The light may stay on.
- Stop water use. No laundry, dishwasher or showers until the cause is found.
- Check the breaker. Pumps often have their own breaker. If it tripped, reset it once. If it trips again, leave it off and call.
- Listen at the pump tank. If the pump hums but the level doesn't drop, it may be clogged.
- Wait a few hours. If the pump is working, the alarm should clear as the level falls.
- Call a septic service if the alarm stays on, keeps coming back, or you see sewage.
Never open the tank and climb or lean in: septic gases can kill.
Common causes and fix costs
| Cause | Typical fix cost | Source |
|---|
| Tripped breaker | $0 | Reset once |
| Heavy water use (laundry day, guests) | $0 | Spread laundry over the week (EPA) |
| Clogged effluent filter | $100–$300 | Cleaning $100–$200 (This Old House); replacement $200–$300 (HomeGuide) |
| Failed control panel | $300–$500 | HomeGuide |
| New pump alarm | About $475–$500 | LawnStarter; Angi |
| Failed pump | $500–$2,000 | Pump replacement cost |
| Rainwater leaking in through a lid | $150–$600 | Lid repair or replacement (HomeGuide; Angi) |
| Saturated drain field | $3,000–$15,000 | Drain field replacement |
How to stop it happening again
- Spread laundry across the week (EPA).
- Fix leaking toilets and taps.
- Keep gutters and sump pumps draining away from the tank and field.
- Have the pump, floats and alarm checked when the tank is pumped.
Frequently asked questions
Can I still use the toilet if the septic alarm is going off?
Keep it to a minimum. Most pump tanks have some space above the alarm level, but every flush uses it up. Avoid laundry, baths and the dishwasher until the system is fixed.
Why does my septic alarm go off after heavy rain?
Rain and groundwater can leak into the tank or pump chamber through lids, risers or cracks, raising the level faster than the pump can move it. It may clear as the ground dries, but the leak should be fixed.
Is a septic alarm an emergency?
Not usually right away, if you stop using water. It becomes urgent if sewage backs up into the house or surfaces in the yard.
Why is my aerobic system alarm on?
On aerobic systems the alarm can also mean the air pump has stopped. Without air the unit stops treating properly, so call your maintenance provider.
